Vlog #8 - “How to get pets to Big Island”
Bringing your pets to the Big Island of Hawaii requires careful planning and adherence to state regulations.

Here’s a quick guide to help you prepare for a smooth relocation:
- Understand Hawaii’s Quarantine Law: Hawaii is rabies-free, so pets coming into the state must meet strict requirements. If your pet meets all pre-arrival requirements, they may qualify for a direct release or a shortened quarantine period. Start by reviewing the Hawaii Department of Agriculture’s guidelines.
- Microchip and Vaccinations: Ensure your pet is microchipped and up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. You’ll need to provide proof of at least two rabies vaccinations, the most recent being within 12 months (but not less than 30 days) before arrival.
- Rabies Antibody Test (FAVN): Your pet must undergo a FAVN test to confirm adequate rabies antibodies. This test should be conducted at least 120 days before your pet’s arrival in Hawaii.
- Health Certificate: Obtain a health certificate from a USDA-accredited veterinarian within 10 days of travel. This certificate confirms that your pet is healthy and fit to fly.
- Booking Travel: Book a pet-friendly flight well in advance. Many airlines have specific requirements and limitations for traveling with pets, especially on long-haul flights like those to Hawaii.
- Pet-Friendly Accommodations: Once on the Big Island, ensure you have pet-friendly accommodations. Some properties have restrictions or additional fees for pets, so confirm in advance.
- Arrival in Hawaii: Upon arrival, your pet will be inspected. If all paperwork is in order, and your pet meets all requirements, they may be released the same day. Otherwise, they might need to stay in quarantine.
